Fridhem was built in 1890 and has been gently renovated to preserve its charm, while at the same time using eco-friendly power and gardening systems as well as a state of the art gigabit Internet connection to “live lightly”. Fridhem is based in the beautiful village of Stjärnsund, Dalarna approximately 200 km northwest of Stockholm. Stjärnsund is known for its rich history of creativity and progressive thinking stretching back to 1700, and was the home of one of Sweden’s best known inventors – Christopher Polhem. If you’d like to connect with other people it’s good to know that Fridhem is a course centre and hostel focusing on events such as yoga, qi gong, dance as well as nature related courses such as forest gardening and permaculture. So there’s always something interesting happening here! There is a sauna and gym nearby that can be used for a modest fee, as well lots of outdoor sports activities such as skating, cross-country skiing, hiking and canoeing / kayaking on the large lakes just a few minutes walk away. In the autumn the woods are full of mushrooms and berries. Shopping etc. There is a fully-equipped country store in Stjärnsund just a few minutes work from Fridhem that is also a parcel delivery / pickup point. There’s always someone you can get a ride with if you need to go shopping in Hedemora at the supermarket and/or chemist Weather It can be quite cold in the winter here (down to -20C) so good warm weather gear is important (including boots).
